Star Trek Mug Cozy

In less than 24 hours my family and I will be heading on a much anticipated holiday to Vancouver and Alaska! We are very fortunate to have friends who live just outside of Vancouver and we will be staying with them for three days before going on a Disney Cruise though the Inside Passage of Alaska. To say thank you, I have made a couple of small gifts for our hosts. They are Trekkies (hopefully I got that right!) so I decided to search for crochet patterns involving Star Trek. I came across a cute pattern for the Star Trek chevron at Birds of a Feather Girls. I did come across pictures of Star Trek mug cozies on Pinterest, but couldn’t find links to any actual patterns. So I made this one up!

Here is my finished cozy…..

If I were to make this pattern again, I would make some small adjustments. I would definitely try to make the chevron a little smaller. The grey wool I had in my stash was 8 ply (Light Worsted or Double Knit) so I would go for a finer wool. If you follow the instructions of the original pattern, you should be fine. The only other thing I did different from the original was to add a border. This was in a double crochet (single crochet if you are using American stitches). This gave it more structure but also increased the overall size.

For the actual cozy, I made this up so my instructions for this are below.  The instructions are UK/Australian with American conversion in brackets.

4mm (G/6) hook
Yarn needle
Small scissors

Yarn – 8ply (Light worsted or Double Knit) – I used Spotlight Stallion

  1. Start with a slip knot in your red yarn.
  2. Chain 35.
  3. Use a slip stitch to connect the first chain to the last chain. Be sure to keep the chain straight.
  4. Starting in the second chain, half treble crochet (half double crochet) in each chain.
  5. When you get back to the start, slip stitch to join the round.
  6. Chain 2 then half treble crochet (half double crochet) in each subsequent chain.
  7. Repeat step 5 and 6 until you have the desired number of rows for your cozy. (I think I did ten rows of the red).
  8. Finish the last red round with a slip stitch then join your black yarn.
  9. Repeat step 6 then 5 with your black yarn twice.
  10. After your final slip stitch, secure the yarn and weave in all ends.
  11. Lastly, attach the chevron. Here is a great tutorial on how to attach applique or a motif to a crocheted item.
